The Journey
Just getting started? Need a guide to help you? Healing from injuries or deal with chronic conditions? Wherever you are at, SurfHab mentoring may be just what you need.
One-on-One Mentoring
Like any discipline, it's great to study the subject in different ways - practicing it, thinking about it, participating in peer groups and meeting with your mentor regularly. Mentoring is great for surfers wanting to round out their learning and to have the presence of someone right there with them. We slow down for a time and enjoy focusing on particular aspects that can't be focused on while in the water or while socializing with peers. We also address difficulties and challenges, then set goals and have weekly assignments.
Oral Tradition
If you're not familiar with oral tradition, it's the passing of knowledge from one to another in each others' presence. Leading by example and instructing through speech is a completely unique experience that cannot be reproduced. That is why it is so special and so important. Today we have unlimited videos on the internet that "instruct". It may seem "real" because real people make the videos and real people watch them. But it actually diminishes social skills, breaks down families and communities, and lulls us into a false sense of reality. For that reason, SurfHab intentionally does not make mentoring videos.
Here below are the three main focuses of The Surf Haberdashery's mentoring club. At our consultation, we discuss your picture, goals and needs. We'll select which of the three focuses are right for you.
1) Learning Water Conditions
Local surfers here spend a lot of time outside the water taking in the beauty of the ocean and watching waves. As a mentoree, you get to spend time with your mentor at different surf spots, learning how to understand what you are observing. This is an important activity as it teaches you how to prevent injury and have the most fun possible! But it's not just that, it's a very deep experience that can only be shown.
2) Learning Movements
What we do in the water and between sessions is important. Surfing and the other daily activites of life have a symbiotic relationship to one another. Surfing is a joy on its own that can excite us and also heal pain. Sometimes though, we can get injured if we aren't careful. The rest of the day's activities are the same. They can bring joy or sometimes pain. Some activites are mellow and within more of our control and some are extreme and need plenty of forethought. Surfing is considered an extreme sport and requires careful thought and focus, as well as know-how. What each activity brings on any given day affects all other activities.
So, we'll talk about movement in the water and movement onshore. You may do better in one area than the other. Or you may find that surfing is healing injuries that occurred onshore or vice versa. We will determine at any given time where you are at, and talk about fluid movement techniques, similar to Alexander technique, which is often used in music training. Anna specializes in helping people with chronic pain and traumatic injuries. She herself is a survivor of multiple traumas because of dedication to practicing specific body movements. Music training has directly influenced her success in dealing with permanent damage. Her daily pain is so manageable that much of the time there is no pain at all, and thankfully is maintained without any damaging drugs or extreme therapies.
3) Learning Homeopathics
Moving on to medicinal remedies - After nearly kicking the bucket over 15 times, Anna firmly believes and knows that any medicine, help or therapy that harms is not healing you. It pretends to heal you by shifting your symptoms to another set of symptoms. But then you have to take another drug to fix the new symptoms and then you are hooked. "Do No Harm" is a traditional practice that works, but in large, is often pushed aside by power and greed.
Anna's approach is gentle and careful when working on body movements. With remedies, it's the same. Combining the two can show astounding results. The best way to approach that is to add one at a time so you can see what is working.
Homeopathics were invented at the turn of the 19th century in Germany. SurfHab retails it to you from France where it's made. We have are about 1600 options, with about 150 options in stock at anytime. Anna has seen miracles happen in herself and many others. She helps you find the remedies you need, offers you samples that you can try and see if they work. It only takes 5 pellets and waiting 10 minutes, then you know. Certain exceptions apply depending on the symptom being treated. It usually works best when the symptom is present.
She also has you muscle test on them first to see if they are going to be effective. Homeopathic pellets are a sublingual that tastes delightful, just like a light sugary taste. It also comes in creams, gels and ointments for the skin. SurfHab always has Arnica Montana around for bruises, cut, scrapes, concussions and more! It's Anna's personal favorite for so many things. For more information, please visit SurfHab's related business, The Homeopathy Lounge at House of Greco to learn more and see a full catalog. Any product you see on that website is available to all SurfHab customers. We have over 4000 different products warehoused in Capitola from this general store.
Your Mentor
Anna is a local surfer, enjoying the surf life with all it has to offer. She had a dream as a youth to be a surfer but left home for some time. When she returned she started and hasn't stopped! She has been in the water anywhere from 1 to 5 times a week for several years now. It is an equal passion with her first career as a concert pianist. She grew up playing piano, got a performance degree, then became a professional musician in the Boston area for 15 years. She has returned home to surf and enjoys the grand beauty of the California coastline. She loves to share her passion about both music and surfing. Anna has found a great deal of similarities between the two and finds that she is her best self when she stays immersed in these.
